Latest Government update on Covid-19

Latest Government update on Covid-19

2nd December 2021
As of Tuesday 30th November 2021, the Government has made it a legal requirement to wear face coverings in shops and on public transport, this is to reduce the transmission of infection in light of the new Covid-19 variant Omicron.
At PSVT we take the safety of our people and customers very seriously. Therefore, as of today, all staff, volunteers, customers and visitors must wear face coverings in all public areas in all of our buildings. This includes when entering and exiting buildings, using public toilet facilities, and in corridors and stairways.
Whilst the Government has not made the wearing of face coverings compulsory in our attractions we will continue with our current policy, which is that face coverings should be worn at all times for the continued safety of our visitors and team members. Thank you!

PSVT and University of Manchester partner in heritage project

PSVT and University of Manchester partner in heritage project

Port Sunlight Village Trust (PSVT) and the Institute of Cultural Practices at the University of Manchester are partnering in an 18-month project to transform the ways in which Port Sunlight’s history and collections are interpreted and understood.

The project will be led by an Inclusive Heritage Associate, a new and dedicated post, for which recruitment is about to commence. The focus of their work will be to design and deliver a number of pilot projects in relation to the village’s founder William Lever and the exploitation of Lever Brothers’ Congolese employees in the 20th century.

The post is funded through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) award, a UK Government scheme intended to promote sustained and mutually beneficial relationships between universities and industry.

The Black Lives Matter movement (BLM) has had a profound effect on the museum and heritage sector, calling into question the ways in which we discuss and deal with racial prejudice in the UK. The demand for action on questions of sensitive heritage continues to grow. This project represents an important part of Port Sunlight’s response.

Until recently, the story of Port Sunlight’s founding, by industrialist William Lever, has centred on his deserved reputation for philanthropy and support for progressing worker’s rights in the last century. However, PSVT recognises that it is now critical for the organisation to explore a fuller story of the village’s founder, encompassing, amongst other storylines, the exploitation of Lever Brother’s Congolese employees during the twentieth century.

Paul Harris, CEO of PSVT said:

“It’s time to start talking about all aspects of Port Sunlight’s history and legacy, the good and the bad. Not only is it the right thing to […]

Port Sunlight Village Trust appoints urban designers for new public realm strategy

Port Sunlight Village Trust appoints urban designers for new public realm strategy

Port Sunlight Village Trust (PSVT) has appointed urban designers and landscape architects Planit-IE to develop a new public realm strategy for Port Sunlight. The brief was developed in partnership with Wirral Council who have a shared responsibility for the village’s public realm.

The public realm plays a fundamental role in how well places function and our perception and understanding of them. For PSVT, the commissioning of a public realm strategy represents a very significant step in the organisation’s journey towards realising its vision for Port Sunlight, to create ‘an inspiring place to live, work and visit’.

Since the launch of PSVT’s new 5-year strategic plan in 2019, a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to support the development of a new masterplan for the village. The staff and Board have worked with some brilliant organisations to develop their thinking, including Chris Blandford Associates, Creative Heritage Consultants, L&R Consulting, Outside Studios, Donald Insall Associates, the University of Manchester, EMBED and the Disability Collaborative Network, and The Environment Partnership.

Over the last two years, and in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic, PSVT has identified new uses for its public buildings and spaces, improved its understanding of the significance and meaning of the site, begun to adopt a fresh approach to interpreting the village’s heritage, increased its knowledge of the condition and needs of Port Sunlight’s heritage assets, and taken time to reflect on its role in combatting climate change and social injustice.
