Opportunity: An ecological survey and biodiversity plan for Port Sunlight

Opportunity: An ecological survey and biodiversity plan for Port Sunlight

Port Sunlight Village Trust (PSVT) is looking for an experienced consultant to undertake an ecological survey of Port Sunlight village and to use the findings to produce a biodiversity plan identifying priority interventions.

What we’re looking for

Simply put, we want to understand the current contribution Port Sunlight’s architecture, parks, gardens, and treescape make to biodiversity so that we can improve it, and to explore how we might create new opportunities for biodiversity within the village.

This work is important to us. It speaks to our commitment to arresting climate change and our recognition of the value of Port Sunlight’s green spaces for all living things. It will support and inform our policies and procedures and guide our decision-making and investment in the village. It will also enhance our public programming and education provision.

We are eager to look beyond the boundaries of Port Sunlight and to foster a joined-up approach with neighbouring wildlife sites, other local organisations with similar responsibilities and values, and the Local Planning Authority, Wirral Council.

Who we’re looking for

Engaging our key stakeholders, internal and external, will be an important part of the brief, both in terms of sharing the survey findings, but also shaping the approach to the biodiversity plan.
We think this brief requires a specialist consultant with experience in undertaking ecological surveys and developing biodiversity plans in mixed use areas with residential, commercial, and tourism activity, along with manufacturing close by. Experience of working in an historic environment would be advantageous along with effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Timings

The deadline for proposals is 5pm on Tuesday 30th April 2024. Ideally an appointment will be made […]

Port Sunlight Museum awarded Royal Society ‘Places of Science’ grant

Port Sunlight Museum awarded Royal Society ‘Places of Science’ grant

Port Sunlight Museum has been chosen as one of thirty-six small museums across the UK to be awarded funding of up to £3,500 by the Royal Society in the latest round of its Places of Science scheme to engage communities with their local science stories.

Places of science aims to celebrate projects that will evoke curiosity, interest and enthusiasm by exploring science in a creative way, while also contributing to the museum sector’s recovery. From family days at the museum, through community-led creation and curation, to workshops for schools and documentary filmmaking, projects offer an exciting way for people to engage with science in the local area and beyond.

Port Sunlight Museum’s ‘The Sunlight Soap Challenge’ will give children aged 11-14 the chance engage in the battle of suds and explore the science of soap production, focusing on sustainability and historic significance in society. The challenge will involve designing a soap product, from the make-up of the soap itself to the packaging, marketing, and distribution, to present to a panel of experts. Winners will be invited to create their very own soap prototype to display in a youth-led popup exhibit in the village’s SoapWorks museum

Jean Milton, Director of Heritage at Port Sunlight Village Trust, said: “We’re very grateful for this funding from the Royal Society, which will provide an exciting opportunity for young people to get creative and bring to life the soapy science that helped to build this special village. We’re looking forward to getting started on the project later this year and seeing what marvellous soap prototypes the young people come up with.”

Port Sunlight’s star: Sophie Somers

Celebrating Women’s History Month

Port Sunlight’s star: Sophie Somers

by Catherine Hindson, Professor of Theatre History, University of Bristol

Photograph from Sophie Somer’s retirement event. Port Sunlight News, volume 25, February – March 1947, p.20. Reproduced with kind permission of Unilever plc and group companies.

A twenty-five-year-old Sophie Somers (1890-1950) came to Port Sunlight for the first time in 1916, following up on an advert Lever Brothers had placed for someone to run their factory’s business and welfare committees.

Her career at Port Sunlight was to last for over three decades and saw her become a well-known leader at the firm, a long-standing village resident, and a popular local personality. As The Liverpool Echo headlined in 1965, in Sophie Somers we can find ‘one of the most outstanding figures in Port Sunlight history’.

Reports of Sophie Somers’s retirement and obituaries published on her death tell us that she represented Port Sunlight’s ideals. It was no coincidence that when the King and Queen of Afghanistan’s meticulously planned royal visit to the factory and village took place in 1928, the ‘model dwelling’ they toured was the home Sophie shared with her sister Ethel (longstanding Lever Brothers Senior Clerk and librarian). A model dwelling, with model inhabitants who embodied the Port Sunlight spirit.

Sophie on Stage

Being a model Port Sunlight citizen involved work and play. For Sophie, most of that play took place on- or back-stage. The village dramatic society had been based at the Gladstone Hall since 1894. In 1921, they renamed themselves The Port Sunlight Players. She became an important member of the group, writing, performing, and organising performances and serving as the society’s Chair. Reviews of her stage roles, including […]

Let’s Talk update: Join us for open meetings in March

Let’s Talk update: Join us for open meetings in March

In 2023, PSVT asked consultants Paul Kelly and Catherine Simmons to develop the first Resident Engagement Strategy for the organisation. Over the autumn, they undertook a survey of village residents and held workshops to gather people’s views on how they would like to be involved in the work of PSVT. Draft proposals were then developed which were tested out with residents at a couple of further workshops, and discussions were also held with the committee of the Port Sunlight Residents Association.

What’s new?

A draft resident engagement strategy has now been produced and discussed with the PSVT Board in January. Catherine and Paul would like to now share their exciting proposals to change how PSVT involves village residents in the work it delivers.

Open meetings

Before the final strategy is approved for implementation by the PSVT Board in March, Catherine and Paul are holding two open public meetings to share the opportunities PSVT want to implement to involve residents in the work of the organisation. These will take place on:

  • Monday 4th March, 6pm, in the Church Hall, Bridge Street
  • Tuesday 5th March, 2pm, in the Church Hall, Bridge Street

The new chair of PSVT, Andrew Bowden, will attend the Monday evening session. Director of Operations Lin Whalley will also attend both meetings.

Register to attend

Please let us know if you can attend by either ringing the Port Sunlight Village Trust Office on 0151 644 4800 or emailing [email protected]

The open meetings will be advertised via PSVT’s social media and in the spring edition of the Gazette, but please do share this information with your neighbours too so that they can join […]

PSVT welcomes new Chair of the Board as charity marks 25 years

Port Sunlight Village Trust welcomes new Chair as charity marks 25 years

The charity responsible for preserving and promoting the historic village of Port Sunlight is not only celebrating its 25th birthday in 2024, but it has also announced experienced housing sector leader Andrew Bowden as its new Chair of the Board.

Port Sunlight Village Trust preserves and promotes the Wirral village, known for being built by William Lever from 1888 to provide housing for ‘Sunlight Soap’ factory workers. PSVT is private landlord to under a third of the village’s houses, public and commercial buildings, and cares for its significant monuments and over 130 acres of parkland and gardens.

To achieve its mission of promoting the village, PSVT also operates Port Sunlight Museum and other visitor attractions, runs an expanding learning programme for schools and education groups, and delivers a year-round programme of events and activities for the public and local community. This work is guided by PSVT’s voluntary Board of Trustees.

Andrew Bowden, the Board’s new Chair, was born and raised in Liverpool and maintains close connections to the area, and has spent over twenty years working within Local Government and the Third Sector prior to becoming the first Chief Executive Officer of a newly formed Housing Association in North Wales. He also recently joined Theatre Clwyd in Mold as a Trustee.

The arrival of Andrew Bowden comes at an exciting time for PSVT as the independent charity marks 25 years since it was set up by Unilever in 1999. Since then, the charity has continued to make Port Sunlight a popular place to live for over 2,000 people, as well welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
