Hillsborough Memorial Appeal

During the early hours of Sunday 7 June 2009 the Hillsborough Memorial Garden in Port Sunlight Village, Merseyside was vandalised by three youths causing extensive damage to 35 metres of stonework.

The Hillsborough Memorial Garden commemorates the 96 Liverpool Football Club supporters who tragically lost their lives on 15 April 1989 whilst watching their team play in the FA Cup semi-final. The memorial - the first to be dedicated -was erected by Unilever, many of whose employees were affected by the disaster.

Port Sunlight Village Trust - a charitable trust now responsible for the preservation of the village - needs your help to raise £26,500 to replace the damaged Portland stonework, improve security in the garden by fitting a CCTV camera, and increase knowledge and understanding of the significance of the memorial by installing an information panel. It is hoped that sufficient funds will be raised by Christmas to enable work to commence early in the New Year. A re-dedication ceremony will be held once the memorial has been restored to its former glory.

The Hillsborough Family Support Group, Liverpool Football Club, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, National Museums Liverpool, the National Football Museum, Wirral Council, and law firm Hill Dickinson are all actively supporting the appeal, along with many other organisations and individuals - local, national and international. The Trust has been overwhelmed by the response to our Appeal and would like to say a massive thank you to all donors and supporters-in kind.
